Final Project
Apr. 21st, 2009 | 12:55 am
Here are the headings and subheadings for my final website I am going to build.
Different views of technology (I will use the articles we have talked about in class as well as supplementing with other issues we have raised in class)
-Utopian views
-Distopian views
-Is there the possibility for a happy medium...?
Artificial Intelligence
-whats happening now (what advances are being made right now)
-the possibilities (what could this mean for us, what could the future bring?)
-the issues this raises (use of article discussion as well as any moral/ethical issues raised)
Genetic Engineering
-whats happening now (what advances are being made right now)
-the possibilities (what could this mean for us, what could the future bring?)
-the issues this raises (use of article discussion as well as any moral/ethical issues raised)
Uses of the internet
-virtual worlds
-flat world
-redefinition of societal interactions (need things faster)
I am excited about getting to explore so many different things we have covered and building them into a web page that will be more substantial than anything I have done so far.

Second Life
Apr. 16th, 2009 | 01:37 am
So my experience of playing Second Life was a little uneventful. Maybe it was the time that I was playing, maybe I just ended up in places where people didn't go a lot. I'm not sure.
I am having a little trouble understanding the appeal of Second Life. I think a lot of it has to do with me not growing up on any video games. The only computer games I ever played were Carmen San Diego and Oregon Trail. We didn't ever have a game console until I was already in college. So I think part of it is that I am not drawn into the gaming thing at all.
Even though I don't want to judge people and I am trying to understand the whole thing is just a little outside the comfort realm. No one has ever really been able to explain to me why it is people are so invested in these games, and why it is perceived as such a strange counter culture.
I think in all the time I was on I saw two other people and they were in the distance. Its not intuitive to me how to get around and find places and interact with people.

Mini-site 5 Robotics in the News
Apr. 7th, 2009 | 08:23 am
Hello,
I did this mini-site on stories about the progress of robotics that I found on the news.
http://www.resnet.trinity.edu/mship le1/robotics.website/index.html
A couple of things:
-I couldn't get the header to move to the left in line with the text body
-I couldn't separate the footer from the body text
-I forgot how to make the color go to the bottom even with the other column.

website design
Mar. 24th, 2009 | 12:15 am
This is one of the coolest website designs ever...my uncle showed it to me ( he works on his own website http://www.swaptree.com/ and is just generally interested in cool website design)
http://www.etsy.com/
If you click buy, there are all the different ways that you can search for products through the sight....then if you click colors the sight will find items for you that fit the color that you just selected.
Some examples of website design that could be improved in some ways:
I have always loved the store Target, I think they are clean and nice and their website has never had the same vibe. The website seems cluttered and busy without clear distinctions between the sections
http://www.target.com/
Another website that is a bit overwhelming with all of the content is a fashion blog. There are just so many pictures and so much text that is all squeezed together.

Midterm

Here is the link for my midterm site.
http://www.resnet.trinity.edu/mship le1/midterm/index.html
I am still trying to understand how the css stuff works. I dont quite understand the differences, and uses for the div and class things. I also had a really hard time trying to create a text box around the text and a border around the images.

Second Minisite
Mar. 5th, 2009 | 01:57 pm
Here is my second minisite:
http://www.resnet.trinity.edu/mship le1/Website2/index.html
My questions are that I did not want the text to run from the very side to side of the page. So I set a width and then centered it. Want I want to know is how to center the block of text to the page while having the body of the text justified left?
Also I tried to create a border for the photo and could not get it to show up
Lastly I have a caption for one of the pictures...how do I set the text to only be as wide as the picture so that it is clear that it is a caption.

How to deal with the future of technology...?
Feb. 19th, 2009 | 02:30 am
When discussing the readings in class and looking at a dystopian view of what the technological future is going to look like us its hard to imagine really what it will be like. I think that for me I agreed with some of the smaller arguments against a heavy technologically dependent future. It was in the complete ignoring of larger themes and other points of view where it lost me. There was no effort to dispute the other side’s claims in order to strengthen ones own argument. Also the ending solutions were a completely unrealistic and illogical jump.
I think that this means to me that I have concerns about the level of technology in our future and what that will mean for the landscape of our lives. I think to a certain point it is inevitable that technology will continue to develop and for me the best way I can see to be prepared is to keep educated on the current trends and technologies.
I see proof of this is the separation gap between my grandparents or even my parents and my generation. There is a distrust of technology that comes from fear of the unfamiliar.
I think that while technological innovation is inevitable, I do not think that is all bad, at all. While there is something to be said for technology, namely the Industrial Revolution, ruining the environment to a certain degree there are efforts to find ways to restore our habitat and improving our processes. I do worry about the level to which this will make the human race push ourselves to the point at which people will feel the need to alter their genetic code in order to stay competitive.
I also worry about increasing technological advances making the gap between developed and third-world countries grow even farther apart. My optimistic human welfare side hopes that it will become more common to help those in need using the technology at hand, but I do not known whether that is a reality.
I think that one of the main changes that will be made with technology in relation to our lives is that because there will be so many new developments and such a higher level of mastery there will be an increasing ability to personalize things to the individual.

Mini Web Site
Feb. 2nd, 2009 | 11:31 pm
Topic: Globalization of media, creating a "flat world"
I am very interested in this idea that all of the developments in technology, most specifically in the internet have led to this kind of flattening of the world in which the global community shares a much more similar cultural understanding with one another.
Subtopics:
Thomas Friedman: wrote a book on this topic and explored the idea in depth
The idea of the ten flatteners, these are Friedman's catalysts for creating this
benefits to globalization
negatives of globalization
I understand most of how the mini-website is put together. I see getting the links to connect to the different pages. I am not sure how to get it so that the links stay at the top of each page for each individual page of the four subtopics...is there one central page connecting the four together or is the information for all in each....? (if that question even made any sense)

Genetics....
Jan. 21st, 2009 | 11:08 pm
It is very interesting to me to try and figure out the compromise between the organic/support the earth movement and the huge changes in technology that are constantly happening. At times they seem to me to be opposing movements, but there are times at which they support one another amazingly.
With all of this new technology that is being developed and the extent to which some advances are being shared and researched internationally it is interesting to think about how new terms, guidelines of conduct and procedures are set up among groups. During class I talked about a database of words that has been developed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (http://www.fao.org/biotech/index_gloss ary.asp). I think it is amazing the way that they have had to develop a glossary of terms in order to do business with one another.
In the end of my last post I had talked about the possibility that there may come a time when people will be socially expected to alter their child's DNA before they are born. Today I was reading the newspaper and came across an article in the New York Times about parents who rely on faith based healing being tried for reckless endangerment of their daughter. Will there come a time that parents can be held responsible for an illness or disability that their child has as a result of their parent choosing not to alter their DNA. I think that there are so many ethical questions there. Does anyone have the right to tell you that you have the alter your DNA? (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/21/us/2 1faith.html?_r=1&ref=health)

This is me...
Jan. 15th, 2009 | 09:24 am
To cover all of the typical get to know you questions...My name is Marisa Wynn Shipley. I am a junior double majoring in Communication and Art History. I would like to go in to non-profit work with foster kids (after I graduate and probably go to graduate school...where and specifically in what i am not sure). I was born in Colorado Springs moved to LA when I was 2 and aside from a brief stint in small town West Texas have been in LA until now. I have lived in 13 houses in my almost 21 years and this past summer i helped move my family from LA to Austin. My dad is still in LA for now working (he owns a company that builds sets for television commercials ) until he finds someone to takeover...
On campus here I am the Director of TIGER Council. (if you don't know what that is we provide funding and support for individual students, groups of students and student organizations that want to put on an event for the student body). I am also involved in Mu Phi Epsilon the professional music fraternity on campus (even though i don't do anything music related- besides dance).
I am a dancer at heart, always will be. I did ballet for 10+ years and then quit and now i just dance for fun. I am involved in Momentum, the dance show here that we put on every spring. I go Salsa dancing Wednesday nights and am super excited to be taking Country Western Dance this semester.
One of the things I thought about today in class when we were discussing altering your children's DNA is when will that become socially required? What I mean by that is parents who do not vaccinate their children for different reasons (belief that it causes Autism, or religious beliefs...) are looked down upon and have in cases been tried for endangering their children. Will it come to the point that when a parent does not alter their child's DNA they can be held responsible for any disability or premature death that might happen? scary thought....
